FotoSketcher for MacOS (updated)

Hi all,

I have just recompiled a new version of FotoSketcher 3.30 for MacOS, which solves the trackbar bug (where the trackbar cursor positions would not update properly).

This makes FotoSketcher much more usable on Macs. I have successfully tested on MacOS El Capitan.

To download, head over to https://www.fosshub.com/FotoSketcher.html.

https://www.fosshub.com/FotoSketcher.html/FotoSketcher_Mac.app.zip

Some Mac users have mentioned that they were unable to download and install on MacOS El Capitan, due to security reasons.

This is because I do not have an Apple developper ID, not because FotoSketcher is a dangerous application (just make sure you ONLY download it from the official page https://www.fosshub.com/FotoSketcher.html).

Here is the Apple support answer to this problem: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202491

Have fun on your Macs!

Best regards,

David

Hi David, Just downloaded and running it on Sierra 10.12.5. Runs great! Thanks so much for releasing this for the Mac.

Hi,
I'm afraid I don't know what might be causing this issue. Can you tell me which version of MacOS you are running (Sierra, El Capitan, other) and what Mac you have?

Unknown said...

I just downloaded the new Mac version and mine is doing the same thing as Axellred. It starts to open ... and then just closes. No messages or anything. My Mac is on 10.12.5 and it is a 15-inch 2017 MacBook Pro2.7Ghz. Let me know if there is anything else you need me to check in my environment.

Hi Todd,
I also have Sierra (10.12.5) and I believe that the problem is indeed related to Gatekeeper. As mentioned in the Apple support page I linked in the post above, have you tried changing the Gatekeeper settings to allow applications downloaded from anywhere ? (Gatekeeper options are found in Apple menu > System Preferences… > Security & Privacy > General tab under the header "Allow applications downloaded from: Anywhere".
I hope this will solve the issue.
Regards,
David

Thanks for the quick reply. I am familiar with the setting and sadly I already had it enabled before trying to open the app. And technically, there isn't an "anywhere" setting - it is listed as "App Store and identified developers" in 10.12.5. Anything else you want me to check?

Hi Todd,
Maybe you could try to ctrl+click on the FotoSketcher icon and select "open", as stated here: https://support.apple.com/kb/PH25088?locale=en_US

Interesting - never tried that before. Just tried it and no luck - still just opens/closes upon loading. What version of Wine was this built on? Perhaps it has some prerequisites or such that Wine needs that my laptop is missing. I thought I would poke around on Wine's site for a bit and see if I am missing anything. Thanks again.

I used WineBottler 1.8 development rc4. Maybe I'll try again with the stable 1.8 version. I had to use comctl32 to get the trackbars working, maybe that's where the problem comes from... If you install WineHQ and get it to work with FS, I'd be happy to hear from you :)

Thanks - I will get it installed here shortly and report back on what happened.

Did anyone ever resolve this? Still having the same issue on Sierra with same setup as posted above

David said...

I haven't been able to test on a different Mac, but for me it works fine in Sierra. Strange...

Exits immediately on Sierra for me, ask well.

David said...

Thanks, Mike. If anyone is feeling courageous, I would be interested in knowing of WineHQ works on their Mac and if the portable Windows version of FotoSketcher works with WineHQ... I did work for me, but I would welcome feedback from people with different hardware.

Excellent suggestion David. I seem to be able to run the 32bit Windows exe with wine stable 2.0.2 through the terminal on sierra. Wonderful app, keep up the great work!

Thanks for testing and for your feedback! I tested yesterday on a 2015 MacBook Pro with Yosemite and FotoSketcher worked fine (just had to run it with Crl+click to open).

For those of you who can't run FotoSketcher for MacOS, you can try to run the Windows 32bit version on your Mac using WineHQ. Download the stable version of WineHQ here: https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/macosx/pool/winehq-stable-2.0.2.pkg and follow the instructions (https://wiki.winehq.org/MacOS). Once WineHQ is installed on your Mac, download the Windows version of FotoSketcher (http://www.fotosketcher.com/FotoSketcher_3.30_portable_32bit.exe) and run it.

Hi David. Love Fotosketched. Do you have plans for iOS? Would be fantastic, and good sales market for you too.. Yuri

David said...

Hi Yuri,
I'm experimenting with Android at the moment and the code base could be re-used for iOS. So I'm not saying never ;)

Thanks David. Very much looking forward.

Hi

Any news on the Android app.

David said...

Hi,
I've made some progress on the Android version, but the algorithms run very slow. I'm not sure I can actually release a usable version yet. Either I have to dumb down the effects for them to run fast, or have to wait a minute to get a nice result. I'm still experimenting, but it's slow progress.

Hi David, it is Yuri again. Maybe a solution would be to shorten a number of strokes and their size? Still would be great to have it on tablets. I'm specifically waiting for iOS verion for iPad pro. There are several "painting" apps for iOS which consume quite a lot of device resources, but working good on Pro version.

David said...

Yes, it is possible that the effects will be slightly different on mobile, but I want to try and get results as close as possible to the desktop version. BTW, I just tried yesterday to recompile the Android code base for Mac and it worked fine (better than the WineBottler version currently available).

Wow, that's great David. Looking forward. I'm going to do a tut for using combination of other apps and FotoSketcher on my www.photo2paint.com site. Yuri

Brilliant :) I look forward to seeing your tutorial!

Hi
I have a fast PC with 32Gb Ram , but having just downloaded FotoSketcher I am finding it paifully slow at all stages. Is there a problem with my copy, or is this normal?
I am otherwise very impressed by what it can do.

David said...

Hi,
FotoSketcher can indeed slow to a crawl if the source image is quite large. I would suggest reducing the size to a maximum of around 5000x4000 pixels. You can do that inside FotoSketcher (press CTRL+R to bring up the dialog box). Hopefully this should speed things up for you.

Grandad said...

Thanks David,
I have tried reducing the size of JPEGs to see if the program would run faster, but will experiment with your suggested limit.
In the meantime, has anyone else experienced this problem?

Hi David
Thanks for the suggestion. I have given it a try, but unfortunately downsizing has made no difference.
I wondered whether something had gone wrong with my original download so I uninstalled the program and downloaded a fresh copy. Disappointingly it has again made no difference despite using a small image. I have noticed that it is not just the final processing that is slow, but the program is also slow from start up to the point of committing to the Draw stage. It is all very puzzling as I use Photoshop CC with very large images with no problem.

David said...

That's definitely not normal. My guess is that some other process is interfering with FotoSketcher (could be the antivirus for instance). You could try the 64bit version (available at fosshub.com) or run FS as admin and see if it makes a difference. Don't hesitate to send me an e-mail at contact(at sign)fotosketcher.com for further support.

Dave, Love the program. I am considering updating to Mojave (OS 10.14) but didn't want to do it if FotoSketcher isn't 64-bit or comparable with Mojave in any other way. Any suggestions?

Is there already a version of fotsketcher for Mac Big Sur?

David said...

Hi,
Not just yet, but I'm working on a new version of FotoSketcher which will be 100% compatible with Big Sur. I have just recently become an official Apple Developer and my first tests on MacOS are successful. So far, I have ported only a couple of effects as it is time intensive work.

Kate said...

Thanks for working on a Big Sur version! I used to use FotoSketcher on my previous Mac but am having that crashing problem that others had with Sierra now on Big Sur. I sent you a small amount of $ for coffee or whatever. Sorry it couldn't be more but I love your software and will look forward to the version I can use :)

David said...

Hi Kate,
Thank you very much!
I've been able to run a couple of effects (pencil sketch and watercolor) on Big Sur and have just updated my Mac to Monterey. Hopefully it will work on it too. It's time consuming work, but at least I'm making progress :)
