FotoSketcher 3.80 for Windows - beta 1 - available for testing

Hi all,

FotoSketcher 3.80 is almost ready and a beta version can be downloaded here for testing purposes: https://www.fotosketcher.com/FotoSketcher_3.80_beta1.exe

This is a Windows only release.

Side-note : I am still working on the future multi-platform version (Windows + Mac to start with), but I've hit some technical difficulties. On MacOS the Painting 4 effect is painfully slow (much more than on Windows) and sometimes crashes. So more debugging work is necessary.

Here are some of the new features in v3.80:

  • Larger preview area (21% larger)
  • Painting 4 can now run without erasing the previous painting. This can be useful to mix effects or to start with broad brushtrokes and then load finer brushes and run the effect again. To run Painting 4 without erasing the previous image, RIGHT-CLICK on the Draw button instead of left-clicking.
  • Painting 4 now has an svg export (once the effect has finished, a SVG button will appear, below the HD button). This exports the basic rectangles, not the brushstrokes.
  • Pencil Sketch 1 has been refined (less blurry)
  • Custom transparent PNG frames are now supported (as shown in the screenshot above). Just drag and drop the PNG frame onto the right-panel image and voila!
  • Custom brush directory for Painting 4 is now "remembered" and you can open an image from one directory and brushes from another without having to navigate your folders back and forth.
  • A new language is now supported, Danish, thanks to the translation by Kenneth TOLLUND (big thanks to him and all other translators!)

As always, I hope you have fun playing with FotoSketcher and please let me know if you find any bugs in this beta version.

All the best,

David

Hi David,

Thanks for sharing the beta, looks very promising. Some feedback: On first opening FotoSketcher, Painting 4 does not remember the folder where I've stored the custom brushes from the previous session. Once I have found and opened a brush, it will remember the location for the remainder of the current session. (I thought it would be great if it remembered the brush location from session to session...). Are you planning on adding this functionality to the other painting options with custom brushes? (7, 8 and 10)

Also, the "up" and "down" arrows on the scroll bar in the File Open dialogue do not work, so one cannot scroll one line at a time. Also, clicking on the scroll bar shaft does not move the scroll window.

Fun stuff. Thank you for continuing to support this fantastic product.

Mark

Hi Mark,
This is by design, as I do not save the brush directory in the ini file. I'll see if I can change that without breaking backwards compatibility. This will be only for Painting 4 for now.
As for the File Open dialog, you need to sue the tab key to get the focus on the list of files. On my PC, that's 7 presses of the tab key. Then the up and down keys will work to scroll. On my machine, clicking on the empty part of the scroll bar does work, so not sure why it does not for you.
BTW, a user has reported an access violation error on older versions of Windows, so I'm still investigating before release.
Cheers,
David

Hi any progress made on android app

Hi Zakir, I'm dependent on a program called CrossVCL and they were supposed to have a version for mobile platforms soon, but now their website only mentions that their goal is to deliver sometime in 2021. Since what that are trying to achieve is incredibly difficult, I'm not surprised. As soon as they have a version for Android, I'll recompile FotoSketcher and see if it works.

Hi David, many thanks for the update. I was really waiting fro this feature to mix large and small brush strokes in one go.

However, when I try to run the mixed result in HD mode, HD only runs the last brush sequence, the small brushes. It doesn't run the mixed result. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

Merci
Yuri

Hi David, once again thanks for the update really useful. I was testing 3.80 beta. Primarily trying change brush mode in preset 4. Idea is great but I'm not yet convinced how it works now. Same as if you did in 3.70 version - wide strokes lay first, then small strokes take over. Almost same thing here when you change from big to small brush on the go. What would be really great is that you paint wide strokes, then stops, change to smaller brush, then MASK the areas which you want to place smaller strokes on, then paint. That would be beautiful. Otherwise, for me, it is still better to combine two images in photoshop and paint out small details on upper layer using mask.

Hi,
The way it works when you right-click the draw button is that Painting 4 is run again, but without erasing the result image. It also does not do the very wide paintbrush strokes (needed in the initial run to cover a larger surface).
In the second pass, only areas where the new brushstrokes will actually improve the accuracy of the result will be painted. So what you could do is use the manual brush with a different effect to kind of mask the areas you want repainted and then run Painting 4 again (with right-click).

Is there a way to remove the logo at the bottom of the picture? That is a new addition and I'd rather not have it on my pictures. Thank you.

Hi,
I guess you have the 'add text' box checked (just above the Draw button). Untick the box and you should be fine.

David
