FotoSketcher alpha release - for Windows and MacOS

Merry Christmas everyone!

I've donned my best Santa Claus suit to bring you a gift today. ;)

Development of the new multi-platform version of FotoSketcher is progressing well, and an alpha release is now available for you to test. While it appears stable, it still needs a bit of polishing and a few features are not available yet (printing, for instance).

However, the following effects are working right now:
  • 3 pencil sketch effects
  • 3 pen & ink effects
  • 3 painting effects (watercolor and brushstrokes)
  • 2 photo filters (soft glow—à la Orton—and vibrance/structure)

Some of these effects are very similar to those in the current Windows version (3.98), while others are brand new or improved.

Most importantly for macOS users, this alpha release should work on any Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 to M5 chips). I intend to compile a test version for older Intel-based Macs soon.

Windows: https://fotosketcher.com/beta/FotoSketcher_Windows.zip

macOS (Apple Silicon): https://fotosketcher.com/beta/FotoSketcher_MacOS.zip

I hope you enjoy playing with this brand new version of FotoSketcher! I would be grateful for your thoughts, suggestions, and - hopefully not too many - bug reports.

Have fun!

David

Hi, David! The new interface is definitely a big improvement: thanks! One quick comment: on Windows 11, the programme takes the whole screen, hiding the task bar.

Thank you Mark and David for your comments.
@Mark, yes, FotoSketcher is currently starting in full screen mode (you can still resize the window), but I will probably change this in a future release.

Hi David, one small note: I use a 2-monitor setup, and when the new version opens, the splash logo screen is centred between the 2 screens... the main window opens full screen on my main monitor, but if I choose the Maximize button (Window 11, top right controls) Fotosketcher shrinks but is centred between the monitors.
Also, are you going to continue the support for 'F12' - re-use the result as the input?
Otherwise, I like the layout and design.
Happy New Year!
Mark

Hi Mark, thank you for your feedback. I've just set up a second monitor so that I can test and I think I've ironed out the bugs. Now FotoSketcher will start on the main monitor correctly and if you move the form to a secondary display, it evens checks if the resolution is lower and resizes the window accordingly. BTW, F12 (or equivalent) will be included. Currently for testing I use copy and paste (CTRL+C and CTRL+V shortcuts will be added). I'm fast moving into beta territory, so I'll soon upload a much more polished version ;)

This is very exciting, thank you for your work!
Will there be support for scripting and running via command-line?

Thank you :) Scripting is indeed very much on the roadmap, but probably not at launch. As for running from the command-line, if it does not involve major changes, I'll try to implement it (at least on Windows).

this is looking great. Two questions. Once you make the changes to the preset, can you save them for future reference? Will there be a brush to lesson the effect in certain areas?

Thanks :) Yes, changing the parameters (like you can do in the current version) will be implemented, it is easy to do. Applying a manual brush, to lessen the effect on some areas, or apply a different effect to those areas is also on the roadmap. At the moment, I'm stabilizing the code and porting a couple more effects (Painting 8 right now).
