FotoSketcher Studio 4.20: A major release is officially here!

Hello everyone,

I am very happy to announce that FotoSketcher version 4.20 is now available for download. A big thank you to everyone who tested the beta version and provided such helpful feedback. Let's be blunt, I am quite proud of the new tools and improvements in this update. Hopefully I did not introduce too many new bugs...🤞

Here is a breakdown of what is new in this release:

- Three new effects As some of you requested, I have ported two classic effects from the old Windows-only 3.98 version: Watercolor 2 and Brushstrokes 2. I have also added a completely new Comic print effect, which is great for giving your photos a classic graphic novel look.

- Advanced Scripting and Batch Mode The new Script Editor is fully up and running. It allows you to write custom scripts to apply a specific sequence of effects. To help you get started, a reference sheet is included, along with a ready-to-use default script straight out of the box that combines three different watercolor renderings. Best of all, the script engine is fully compatible with batch mode, meaning you can apply your custom sequences to an entire folder of images automatically.

- History Gallery Upgrades I have added a new circular magnifying glass preview for the history gallery. This makes it much easier to inspect the fine details of your different image versions before saving. You can also now set any image directly from a thumbnail in the history gallery as your new source or result image, giving you a lot more versatility in your workflow.

- Menu and Workflow Additions The main menu is now more complete. I have added a "Combine source/result" option (F11) to easily merge or blend your images, and a convenient "Check for update" function directly in the menu so you can easily stay on the latest version.

Other improvements

  • The Watercolor 1 effect now works much better when the "Erase background" option is deselected.

  • After weeding out the last few bugs, this version also includes various UI tweaks and stability improvements under the hood.

You can download FotoSketcher Studio 4.20 for free here (Windows and MacOS): https://fotosketcher.com/download-fotosketcher/

I want to sincerely thank everyone who continues to support the project. Whether you test early versions, share your artwork, or support the software with a donation, it is always greatly appreciated and helps keep FotoSketcher completely free.

Have fun with the new version!

Hello, again! I've just done a bit of testing and I get an error message when I change the language (in my case, from Spanish to English). It's happened once after changing the language, and twice when I try to close the programme. And every time, when I reopen it, it's back to English. I can't upload the screenshot here, but I've done the OCR (which mean contain errors): "Exception EAccessViolation dans le module FotoSketcher, exe en 000000000020C654. Violation d'accês à l'adresse 00007FF741 E70654 dans le module 'FotoSketcher.exe' (decalage 200654). Lecture de l'adresse 0000000000000040."

Arrgh, the dreaded Access Violation that of course never happens on my development machine ;) Grabbing a coffee as we speak and going into debug mode.

I've just uploaded a modified version (same download link). Can you download it and re-install? Hopefully, this one will not crash ;)

David García said...

I'm afraid it still crashes. I tried uninstalling and installing it again, but it didn't work.

David said...

That's frustrating... sorry about that. I thought I had found the problem. Maybe it's partially solved, maybe not at all... Can we continue this conversation by email? I'll build a debug version just for you. Can you send me an email to contact@fotosketcher.com? Speak to you soon.

I've just sent you a message ;-)

Thanks, just received it. And thanks for your help in debugging this. I'll update on my blog once the issue is resolved.

Thanks again for all your hard work. I’ve really been enjoying this software a lot. I honestly didn’t run into any bugs or issues, but the language saving error part is true, I did notice that one. Other than that, everything feels great to use and it’s been really fun to play around with.

I also wanted to ask how you made those two images you uploaded here, the comic one and the painting one. They looked really amazing. If you still have the settings or parameters for them, please share them whenever you get some time.

Also don’t forget to get some rest too. You’ve been putting out such great updates in a very short time and it’s seriously appreciated. Take care of yourself, and thanks again for this amazing service.

Thank you so much Jack :) I've just uploaded a new installer for version 4.20 which solves the error message bug when changing languages. As for the two example images, the first one simply uses the new Comic print effect, with just a little bit of color adjustment at the end to make the colors pop (F12 to swap source/result and then Adjustments). The second image (tree) was actually made with many different effects merged. I did not save the workflow, but I will soon post some example scripts, some of which could get close to that result.

Lovely release! I hope a future version will allow us to have a "seed" for different effects so that we can get the same result again if we so desired :)

This is excellent! Thank you!

Thank you! That's a good idea, I'll put that feature in the next release.

Thank you!

Why I dragged an image into FotoSketcher, the image was automatically converted to CMYK... I don't think it did that before. Is that something new?

David said...

Hi, that's a bit strange. FotoSketcher does not convert to CMYK, but operates entirely in RGB (or ARGB) for screen display and processing. It is possible that your original image file was already saved as a CMYK print file and was actually converted to RGB when loaded into FotoSketcher. Don't hesitate to send it to me at contact@fotosketcher.com and I'll run some tests.
